A little about us
It all started
One evening at home while on Facebook when I, Armando Rodríguez Bárcenas Jr., a former lecturer at Inverness College in the School of Business, Engineering, and Creative Studies, took the initiative to propose the formation of a Camera Club in Fort William to my established Photographic Group.
The response was swift and enthusiastic. Six individuals from various locations in Lochaber expressed their interest, including Pauline and Paul Selby, who stepped up to assist with the legal aspects of establishing the club, such as drafting the Constitution and securing Insurance, source the location to accomodate 40 + Members for the first few month.

The Logo
Recognising the need for a strong visual identity, I took charge of designing and registration and Copyright of the Society’s logo.
The logo represents the essence of Fort William, featuring its colours of yellow and black, the regional pride of Lochaber with the Lochaber Axes, and a nod to the Digital Era through the red, green, and blue RGB Lens Iris. The use of Celtic font powerfully conveys our connection to the Scottish Highlands.
Next, we firmly decided on a name that would encapsulate everyone’s diverse abilities and interests: the Fort William Photographic Society. We chose “Photographic” to emphasise the art of photography itself rather than focusing on the equipment used. This inclusive approach ensures that anyone, whether they are using a professional DSLR or a smartphone, feels welcome to contribute their work.
After a few months of diligent preparation and with membership soaring to forty, we held our inaugural meeting at Marcos (now the Nevis Centre) on April 10, 2012.
This marked the official birth of the Fort William Photographic Society. Following our initial theme selection, I created a Facebook Group page that generated significant interest and engagement. It was inspiring to witness the various interpretations shared on the Fort William Photographic Society Facebook page.
